Stephen Hendry to Face Matthew Selt in Comeback Match

The Scot is making his comeback after almost nine years away from the professional game.

Seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry will take on Matthew Selt in the first round of the Gibraltar Open in March.

After months of anticipation surrounding his return to the Main Tour, the 52 year-old will finally compete during the 2020/21 campaign.

Hendry originally announced his intention to return via an invitational tour card last September.

Several delays and mishaps have extended his retirement, including his decision to withdraw from the WST Pro Series and a fiasco that led to his Welsh Open entry being lost to a “glitch” in the online system.

However, fans can now look forward to seeing what kind of level the 36-time ranking event winner can produce as he gets set to make his first appearance in a professional tournament since the 2012 World Snooker Championship.

Hendry and Selt last played each other ten years ago at the 2011 Australian Open – a match the latter prevailed in with a 5-1 scoreline.

Elsewhere in the Gibraltar Open draw, Ronnie O’Sullivan will face Ali Carter in the other standout fixture of the opening round.

The English rivals were due to meet each other in last week’s Welsh Open quarter-finals before Carter withdrew through illness just before their battle was scheduled to commence.

Defending champion Judd Trump will be in action against Robbie Williams while European Series rival Mark Selby will entertain Sam Craigie.

Trump and Selby are the players in prime position to claim the £150,000 European Series bonus on offer for the best performances across a six-tournament swing sponsored by BetVictor.

There is only £6,500 separating the pair in the order of merit, with a Gibraltar Open champion’s cheque worth £50,000 on offer.

Meanwhile, Neil Robertson plays Lei Peifan, Ding Junhui meets Si Jiahui, and Kyren Wilson takes on Kuldesh Johal in a few of the other clashes featuring the marquee players.
